Native to the upper Amazonia, this plant has stunning oval leaves that are dark purple/black and waxy to the feel.
CLASSIFICATION / GENUS:
Commelinaceae / G. poeppigii and G. rhizanthus
Can grow over a 24" leaf with the proper conditions.
This plant does not like cold, its ideal temperature is between 55-75 degrees F.
Mid maintenance, does like a degree of humidity to its environment. Use of misting or humidifier is recommended.
Prefers low filtered light. Not to say you put it in a dark corner, it is use to filtered light as it's habitat was on the rainforest floors.
These plants are found in the jungles underneath canopy, they like their soil semi moist.
It has similar potting mix to the african violet. If you are mixing yourself, you can do a combination of african voilet potting mix, peta moss, vermiculite and perlite.
DOES IT FLOWER?
Yes, its flowers grow on pedicels that are around 2 inches high, they are greenish-brown sepals with petals featuring blue and purple in coloration.
IS IT POISONOUS/TOXIC?
Yes. This plant is considered toxic.
CAN IT BE PROPAGATED FROM CUTTINGS?
Yes! You can cut off any stems, let callous, and stick in water propagation for it to grow new roots. It also can be divided as it has a tubular system, so you can break off the rhizome and directly plant it into soil.
Common pests: Spider mites. / Other common ailments: Leaf spots, fungal spots, bacterial rot.
