Philodendron "Black Cardinal"
+ Comes in a 10" plastic container with wooden post.
Beautiful philodendron that would make all the 17th century Dutch painters cry at its saturated deep hues. Fun fact: It took about six different Philodendrons to create this cultivar in Florida.
CLASSIFICATION / GENUS:
Araceae / Philodendron
Philodendron Narrow Leaf / Philodendron Jungle Boogie
Leaves can get 2-3 feet long. This is not a climbing or vining philodendron, but considered a basal plant or "self-heading", meaning it sprouts from its base.
This plant does not like cold, its ideal temperature is between 55-75 degrees F.
Relatively low Maintenance
Prefers bright indirect light, with some hours of early morning or late afternoon sun, which will help turn its leaves darker. Too little light and the leaves will revert to green, too much direct sunlight and you can burn the leaves.
Watering once a week is preferable to this plant. Never let the soil completely dry out with this plant, but also do not leave it soggy and moist as this can lead to rot. Allow the top to dry out and water.
Well draining soil is great, even aroid mix or sphagnum moss or peat/perlite.
DOES IT FLOWER?
Surprisingly yes, though it is rare.
IS IT POISONOUS/TOXIC?
Yes! This plant is considered toxic to animals and children. So if you have either that like to chew on things you may want to place these up on high.
CAN IT BE PROPAGATED FROM CUTTINGS?
Yes! This is done by division and tissue culture.
Common pests: Spider mites. / Other common ailments: Leaf spots, fungal spots, bacterial rot.
WINTER TRAVEL: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PURCHASE A HEAT-PACK (FOUND WITHIN OUR STORE) IF THE PLANT IS TRAVELING IN BELOW 50 DEGREE WEATHER.
