Burls Residence

The design of the Burls Residence centered on transforming an existing structure into an artist retreat. The exterior was fully re-clad in black Hardie board, while large picture windows were introduced to increase light and visual connection. Inside, the project focused on amplifying spatial volume by fully gutting the interior and reconfiguring all building systems.

The plan was organized as a shotgun-style layout, allowing for a continuous flow from public to private spaces. Custom elements—including built-in cabinetry, a modernized shoji-style sliding screen, and a hand-painted mural running the length of the residence—anchor the interior. The primary bath features a soaking tub with granite tops detailed with a waterfall edge, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on craft, material continuity, and retreat.
